Developmental Delay
Developmental Delay can have a global effect on the functioning
of a child or adult, preventing them from achieving their potential,
not only in physical or academic terms but also socially and
emotionally. Fulfilment and happiness are limited.
In typical child development.....
...most of the infant reflexes become
integrated by the end of the first year. They don’t disappear,
but they become less dominant and allow the baby to begin to take
control of movements. If this does not happen, un-integrated infant
reflexes, if existing in clusters, may prevent the child from gaining
complete control over voluntary movements and may contribute to a range
of behaviours which interfere with brain development, learning and
behaviour. The baby may be late achieving the developmental milestones or some stages are omitted, such as crawling.
This is one of the first signs of Developmental Delay.
Movement control problems....
...cause a wide spectrum of
developmental difficulties, such as aggressive/hostile
behaviour, poor balance and co-ordination, hyperactivity, and can
be associated with fear, anxiety and phobias, delays in speech and
intellectual, emotional and social development.
Many of the children affected find the school environment difficult
and life as an adult is seriously challenging.
